Visual Arts Day 2011
A group of our Year 5 and 6 children took part in an exciting Visual Arts Day, working collaboratively with pupils from Abbeymead and Heron Primary Schools. The pupils were led by a team of PGCE students who are training to become Art teachers in secondary schools and were assisted by ‘A’ level Art students from Bournside school. We were very lucky to be able to use the new Art room at Abbeydale Sports and Community Centre, thanks to Mr Tickner, who organised the day.
Before attending the Visual Arts day the pupils had looked at the work of Hundertwasser, an Austrian artist, and this provided the inspiration for the art work produced by the pupils and also linked with their themes for the term, which are ‘Raging Rivers’ and ‘Rainforests’. Working collaboratively in mixed groups with pupils from Abbeymead and Heron Primary schools, the children produced six fantastic large scale works of art which clearly show the influence of Hundertwasser’s style and themes.
The children were involved in every stage of the work, from planning what to include; to designing and sketching images onto the boards; and mixing vivid colours to create the effects they wanted. The finished work is bold, bright and beautiful! The works of art will be on display at Abbeydale Sports and Community Centre, and are open to the public for viewing. Eventually the three schools involved will all have two panels each to display in school. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day and we are all very proud of the stunning art work they produced!
