Our theme has been "Once upon a time".

Starting to read

Sharing home readers and playing games are fun and if your child enjoys hearing stories, looking at pictures and playing games, he or she will be well on the way to happy reading.

Sharing day to day incidents with your child and relating them to a story is a very important part of learning to read. It is also important that children progress at their own pace and that you give them lots of encouragement. The blue reading books issued to children is to record the books they have shared with you at home. As well as the title, please write in any comments on how they read, what they enjoyed etc; these will be most helpful.

At school we will be sharing stories too, as well as using other materials such as word games and cards to help the children to learn the important words in the book.

Here are a few ideas for things that you could do when sharing a story.

* Talk about the cover and the idea behind the story

* Encourage your child to talk

* Tell the story together

* As you read, run your finger under the text

* Ask your child to retell the story in their own words

* Your child may sometimes bring home reading games to play with you. Please enjoy these games with your child and don't let it become a chore!
